a lecture:
“Relationships for
Reconciliation:
Historical
Relationships in the Process of Reconciliation”
by
Jean-Pierre Morin, Historian, Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada, and
Public Servant-in-Residence, Department of History, Carleton University
In 2015, the
Truth and Reconciliation Commission called on all Canadians to work together to
achieve reconciliation between Indigenous peoples and newcomers within Canadian
society. A significant part of the process of Reconciliation is having a better
understanding of the historical relationships that have emerged and evolved
over time between these groups. This is, however, easier said than done. Based
on his experience as an historian at Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada,
Jean-Pierre Morin will discuss the challenges faced by government in coming to
grips with these historical relationships as it tries to understand the meaning
of Reconciliation, as well as calling on the historical community to become involved
in the very process of Reconciliation.
